Parent Empowerment Training Program (P.E.T.)
Meetings are held from 12 noon until 2 p.m., at Hillside Community Center,
925 S. Institute. Colorado Springs, Co.
Following are workshop dates and descriptions.

Portfolio Development

Parents are required to maintain a portfolio of their students’ academic performance, family’s empowerment goals and community involvement. These binders are reviewed at each meeting and if families plan to return they must have a completed portfolio before approval can be granted.

Understanding and Interpreting Academic Tests and other Assessments

This will help families figure out their child’s academic standing and how to properly monitor their overall success. We will look at results and their meanings for CSAP, Iowa Basics, Stanford 9, and other tests and assessments that are administered in public and private schools.

 Efficacy Training

This workshop will help our parents understand that many of the things they have learned in their lives have influenced who they have become; and that some of those things can determine theirs and their children’s success. The goal is to prove that effort is the key to high achievement/empowerment (i.e., academic, work/career, personal). We will motivate our parents by instilling in them the belief that confidence is built when they commit the necessary effort towards success – for them and their children.

Multiple Intelligence

This workshop will help parents learn the seven different learning styles and how to recognize them in their children. And, how to communicate with their child’s teacher which style their children have and how they might accommodate it in the school environment. This theory of human intelligence, developed by psychologist Howard Gardner, suggests there are at least seven ways that people have of perceiving and understanding the world. Gardner labels each of these ways a distinct "intelligence"--in other words, a set of skills allowing individuals to find and resolve genuine problems they face.
